For some reason, Saint John, New Brunswick (not to be confused with St. John's, Newfoundland) calls their downtown area "Uptown." Whatever you call it, we went to check it out. Our parking lot has portraits of "a few famous folk from Saint John" including Louis B. Mayer, Donald Sutherland, and Walter Pidgeon. There were more, but I wasn't familiar with them.
Gotta love a map of town that includes wifi hotspots.
We checked out Handworks Gallery--a bit more upscale than we were hoping for but it was enjoyable to view the beautiful, exquisite jewelry and pottery. We walked around downtown Saint John's which they call "Uptown". Go figure. We looked for Center Market but got detoured by some major construction and ended up in Market Center. Found cute touristy shop with a nice chatty sales clerk. She goes to Maine to shop at Marden's! She also told us that whenever she goes to Maine she stocks up on turkey (you're allowed one turkey per person in the car, even infants), butter (if a pound of butter is $1 in Maine, it's $4 in Canada) and Philadelphia Brand cream cheese (which can sell for upwards of $4 a package). She also said cereal was outrageous in Canada (even more so than the US). Her son LOVES Kix and so for Christmas she will often wrap up two boxes of cereal for a gift and the rest of the family knows not to touch it. We asked her if everything was cheaper in Maine or just some things. She said most things are the same price. There were some things that were cheaper in Canada (but we've already forgotten what they were). [Editor's note: this blog entry was written less than 24 hours after speaking with this woman but neither of us could remember what she told us in that part of the conversation.]
