Columbia Icefield

Now we're really seeing some glaciers! Facebook friends commented on these photos that they had been here 10 years earlier and could really tell how much everything has receeded in such a short period of time. I'm glad we saw these when we did.

We are in the Columbia Icefield. Athabasca Glacier is here along with "The Glacier Skywalk." There are bus tours that will take you to see the glacier up close and personal. It's the most expensive touristy part of the Icefield Parkway. We drove around to see as much as we could see for free and just kept going. It's crazy to think that these giant ice piles are moving! They're actually heavy enough that gravity is pulling them down the mountainside and because they're made of ice, they're slippery enough to slide right down. Well...slide at the same pace as fingernails grow. But still...they're moving!! It's all pretty hard to comprehend but at least we have had the pleasure and the privilege to have seen it.
