Six weeks ago when we started making reservations for this trip, all the campsites inside Arches National Park were booked. There are only 50 or so. So we found this funny little campground that has tent sites, RV sites, cabins with beds only, a shower house and latrine, but also a few cabins with beds and private baths. We decided to splurge and get the cabin for our first two nights.
It was TINY! How did they squish a sink, microwave, refrigerator, bunk bed, double bed, shower, and toilet all in this tiny space?? So in its own way, it was "rustic," but for us it turned out to be the perfect "transition" to camping as we broke in our gear and ourselves. We immediately started making lists of what we *really* needed. We figured out how to use the Coleman stove (Rodney has the scar of a 2.5 degree burn (more than second degree, not quite third degree) to prove it). And we had a chance to really organize our gear in a functional way. Thank goodness for our tiny front porch (not shown in this photo) that had a built-in bench. We used that instead of our picnic table for our cooking platform. A) It was closer to everything we needed and B) it was a lot less windy on the porch.
But we were successful! We cooked bacon and eggs on the Coleman and they were yummy. We prepped a really nice sack lunch that we appreciated when out in the middle of Canyonlands. It all worked out. (Yes, sadly, the reusable plates were one of the things that didn't get packed so we had to work with paper plates.) Hmmmm. They tasted much better than they look in this picture.
