I love these old mailboxes where there's really just one mailbox at the bottom but you can deposit your mail from any floor and it goes down the chute. Karen and I were fascinated with them when we were kids ... somehow we saw a lot of them in all our family travels. When I saw this one at The Roosevelt Hotel, where we were staying, I was so excited. I was telling Rodney about the childhood memories but it turns out he had never seen one. What?!! How could that be! So I wrote a note to my parents on one of the free postcards (ahhh... another memory from our family travels and something that's hard to find anymore) and asked Rodney to document the process. First problem: the card was too big to fit in the slot. Now we start giggling. But problem solved, I just folded the card a little so that it will fit and now Rodney can take the picture.
Second problem cannot be captured via traditional photography. Oh if only we had been taking video, although even that couldn't really capture the moment. I let go of the card for it to start its journey down and the card got stuck. The folded portion unfolded and the postcard is now lodged between the front glass and the back of the chute. The two of us nearly lost it. What started as giggles turned into uncontrollable laughter. Eventually, I was able to dislodge the card and it fell the rest of the way down the chute (I hope), but oh my oh my, what a hoot of a tale before that happy ending.
